Chapter 35 Controversy surrounding group activities
That day, Chen Che and his roommates arrived at the lecture hall to prepare for class. They saw Bai Mu gesturing wildly at Chen Sui, while Chen Sui shook her head with a serious expression.
"What are you doing?" Chen Che asked Ma Xu beside him.
"I guess they're talking about the group activity," Ma Xu replied.
"What group activity? I don't know anything about it." Chen Che looked confused.
"Don't you check the class group chat?"
"I'm not going to look. I'm just a nobody in the class. Who would bother me if there's nothing wrong? And if there is something, don't bother me." Chen Che habitually said a few trash words, but seeing the 99+ notifications and @all members, he still clicked into the class group to see what they were discussing.
To summarize my understanding, what we need to do now is organize a class activity.
Since it was called a group activity, it was led by the class's group secretary. Bai Mu came up with a plan, which was a rather simple and straightforward all-inclusive package of dinner and karaoke. Then, he symbolically tagged all the members to go through the motions.
Unexpectedly, this immediately garnered a lot of opposition, with everyone expressing their opinions at once. In the end, a faction was formed, led by the Youth League Secretary Bai Mu, an opposition led by the class monitor Chen Sui, and a fence-sitter who were just watching the show.
Chen Che thought about it and realized that while the plan wasn't entirely without fun, it was incredibly boring.
Near the end of get out of class, Bai Mu tagged all the members in the class group chat again.
"Everyone, don't leave after class. Let's discuss the group activity."
Then, as soon as the teacher left, Bai Mu immediately went to find Chen Sui and said with a displeased look, "Chen Sui, I think that as the two core members of the class, we should work together and put our efforts into doing a good job in the group activity. We'll let the students suffer a bit, and I'll take the blame."
Chen Sui shook her head firmly: "Your plan, eating and singing, is not only out of place for a group activity, but more importantly, it will cost a lot of money, which is a considerable expense for some students in the class who are not so well-off."
Chen Che was sitting not far from Chen Sui. Hearing Chen Sui's words, he nodded in approval. He had really thought about what he had told her and remembered it carefully. It seemed that this naive girl had grown a lot.
"Okay, if we can't get along, then let's just vote." Bai Mu saw that communication couldn't solve the problem, so he had to go back to the most basic method.
"Raise your hand if you agree with my proposal."
Besides his roommates, quite a few other people also raised their hands, for a total of 14 votes.
It's understandable, considering that this includes his own roommates, some from families with decent financial situations who don't care, and others who don't actually like the plan but are preparing to join the Party in the future.
After all, the power to report potential Party members will still be in their hands in the future.
"The rest are those who disagree," Chen Sui said.
"Don't rush, what if someone abstains?" Bai Mu said.
"Okay, then raise your hand if you disagree."
Chen Sui and other impoverished students, who had already found the matter meaningless, raised their hands.
The count showed 14 votes.
Wait a minute, there are 29 people in Civil Engineering Class 1, who didn't vote?
Everyone looked at each other, puzzled, and after a while they realized that Chen Che hadn't voted.
"Heh, you love-struck guy, why are you trying to play the neutrality card like Switzerland?" Bai Mu said jokingly.
Chen Che originally wanted to continue being a nobody in the class, but he ended up exposing himself.
Actually, if either side lost one vote, my vote wouldn't matter at all. But since we're now evenly matched, my vote has become crucial.
"I object." Chen Che raised his hand high.
"You're so bored and you still want to spend so much money? How dare you even bring this up?" Bai Mu wouldn't let go of his embarrassing moment, and Chen Che retorted with sarcasm without hesitation.
"You fucking love to contradict me and go against me, don't you?" Bai Mu felt the veins on his forehead bulging.
"Bai Mu, don't yell at your classmates," Chen Sui said, frowning in displeasure.
"Fine~ If you're all against it, then you can come up with your own solutions. Anyway, this group activity has to be held. If you don't have any good ideas, then we'll just have to go back to where we are now." Bai Mu said sarcastically, "What's the use of trying?" and left the classroom without looking back.
In reality, most people are in a passive state of accepting arrangements, with very few willing to object, let alone offer creative opinions.
Seeing that Chen Che shared her opinion, Chen Sui felt a surge of joy and leaned closer to ask, "Chen Che, do you have any good ideas?"
Chen Che replied simply, "Not yet."
"Okay." Chen Sui pouted in disappointment. Indeed, it didn't really have much to do with the other person.
When afternoon classes started, Chen Sui finally had some ideas in her hazy mind and wanted to talk to Chen Che about it. However, after looking around, she realized that he hadn't come to class at all.
"This guy actually skipped class!" Chen Sui thought angrily.
She was originally going to send him a voice message to loudly criticize his truancy, but the lack of a reply made her feel a little disheartened.
"Chen Che, you skipped class! You're finished!"
"Where have you been? I need to talk to you about something."
"hello?"
……
On the second day of my major class, I happened to be there when the teacher took attendance. The roster was still fresh from when I first took it.
"Chen Che? Chen Che? Is Chen Che here?" The teacher asked, sounding a little annoyed.
"Just so you know, I'm going to take attendance randomly in my class. If I catch someone absent, I'll deduct their participation points. If they skip three times, they'll fail and have to prepare for a makeup exam." The teacher calmly stated something terrifying.
One person, with a smug, petty expression, couldn't help but burst out laughing.
Chen Sui wondered if there could be anyone else besides Bai Mu.
Chen Sui suddenly spoke up: "Teacher, Chen Che has asked for leave and told me. He will submit the leave slip later."
"Okay, next time bring the leave slip first. Don't do it again."
Whispers began to circulate around them, mostly meaningless and baseless guesses.
"What's wrong? You've only had a few days of regular classes and you're already asking for leave?"
"Maybe he just doesn't want to come to class and made up some excuse; he hasn't even finished making it up yet. After all, he never came to evening self-study sessions before."
"Sigh, that's how it is in freshman year. Just keep your distance from classmates who don't like to study."
Chen Sui ignored the gossip and focused on figuring out the best way to organize the group activities.
I asked around among the upperclassmen, and then searched and pondered for a while, until I was a bit exhausted, before I finally came up with a barely satisfactory idea.
There's a forest park near the school, so let's just organize a simple hiking activity.
Although we are classmates, most of us don't have any particularly deep friendships even if we study together for four years. In fact, by the time we graduate, we have lost touch.
Not to mention spending a sum of money to play together.
Although it doesn't feel particularly innovative, at least everyone can save a rather meaningless expense.
Just then, my phone rang, and a message from Chen Che came through.
Keanu Reeves: "Class monitor, I have a plan that can bring our class's group activities back to life. Would you like to hear it?"
