Chapter 96 Basic Guiding Techniques, The Price of Greed
Chapter 96 Basic Guiding Techniques, The Price of Greed
Wizards are generally aloof from one another, unlike the more cheerful knights. They tend to be solitary, each immersed in their own world, and their interactions are usually brief and superficial, rarely involving deep friendships.
Judging from their attire, most of them were second-class wizard apprentices, with two third-class wizard apprentices as well. These apprentices had different expressions; some held their heads slightly high, exuding arrogance, while others lowered their heads in deep thought, seemingly pondering something.
Soon, the ship began to change course, heading away from the coast. The wind on the sea grew stronger, making the sails flutter and the ship rock.
"Alright, let's officially set sail then. Lin Wei, you're a newbie, so you need to learn carefully. Otherwise, you'll only suffer if you can't get any sea monster flesh later." Kaiya took out a thin, transparent thread, attached the end to his wand, and threw the thread into the sea. His movements were very practiced, as if he had done it countless times. "As modern wizards, knowledge alone is not enough. We also need to contribute to everyone. These sea creatures are our number one enemy. Even if we are just wizarding apprentices, we still need to fulfill our responsibilities."
The other wizard apprentices were in the same boat, somewhat like fishing, except without bait, only a thin, transparent line. Some stood ramrod straight, while others leaned casually against the gunwale, their eyes filled with anticipation.
"These fine threads are specially made so that our water elemental factors can be transmitted to the bottom, attracting a small area of sea creatures," Kaia explained, his voice slightly ethereal in the wind.
Then he tossed over a parchment scroll, which read "An Introduction to Basic Wizarding Induction." The scroll fluttered through the air before finally landing in Lin Wei's hand.
"Learn it now, and try it out." After saying that, Kaiya closed his eyes and began to feel the changes on his wand. His face was very calm, as if he had already gotten used to it all.
Lin Wei thought to himself, "These guys look so much like fishermen from Earth, only they've changed into wizard robes." As he thought this, he opened the parchment scroll.
Lin Wei quickly finished studying the conduction technique. He frowned and muttered, "The core is the conduction itself. On average, each conduction consumes about five elemental factors. The more you use, the more sea creatures you attract. These guys seem to have a natural hatred for us wizards. I wonder where they came from."
Just as he was about to give it a try, a second-class wizard apprentice next to him let out a strange cry, his body jolted, and a look of horror appeared on his face.
"We've got a job."
His thin line trembled incessantly, and then a huge, jet-black fish, over two meters wide, was pulled up, its gaping maw lunging straight at the wizard apprentice's head. The fish's teeth were incredibly sharp, gleaming coldly in the sunlight.
"That's a stonefish, be careful!" Kaiya reacted the fastest, shouting, but his body remained motionless, just watching silently.
Several people nearby quickly scattered and ran away. Some of them slipped and almost fell, but they still ran desperately to the side.
"Stone fish? Oh no, this fish is very powerful." The wizard apprentice's face turned pale, and his body trembled. He began to wave his wand, and rough, water-colored daggers appeared, shooting towards the large, black fish.
Ding Ding!
The fish was incredibly tough; the wizard apprentice's attacks caused absolutely no damage, and instead brought him even closer. The fish swung its tail, splashing up large sprays of water.
"These sea creatures are much stronger than the ones we've encountered before. It seems even a wizard apprentice wouldn't have an easy time dealing with them," Lin Wei muttered to himself, his hands clenched tightly, his eyes filled with tension.
"Oh no!" The wizard apprentice was horrified and instinctively took a step back.
The wizard apprentice frantically waved his wand, but to little avail. He was eventually devoured by the giant fish, half his body torn away, his blood staining a small patch of deck. The blood flowed down the deck, emitting a pungent odor.
The big fish seemed to have eaten its fill, and slid back into the sea from the deck, splashing up a huge spray of water.
"This guy, dead? This was a second-tier wizard apprentice, just like that, he's dead?"
Things happened very quickly. Lin Wei stared at the corpse of the wizard apprentice, his eyes wide and his mouth slightly open, his face filled with shock.
"That's right, he's dead." Kaiya said with some regret, shaking his head slightly. "He was too greedy, he actually lured a stonefish up here, and that fish was beyond his ability to handle."
"Except for Lin Wei, who is a newcomer, everyone else has to rely on themselves. That's the rule."
The others, as if it were a common occurrence, returned to their positions and continued pulling. Some dusted themselves off, while others straightened their clothes.
Before long, a small blue fish, about half a meter long, was pulled ashore and killed by a second-class wizard apprentice. He happily dissected it, putting the valuables into his bag. A satisfied smile appeared on his face, as if he had discovered a huge treasure.
"This little blue fish is very weak, which is just right for a second-level wizard apprentice to deal with. It can both obtain resources and accumulate the flesh and blood of the sea creatures that need to be handed over."
Kaiya explained from the side, his hands behind his back, his expression very calm.
"Indeed, I reckon one punch would kill this little blue fish," Lin Wei thought. "But if we want to acquire more resources, we'll definitely need to bring up stronger sea creatures, which would also increase the weight of their flesh and blood. Risk always comes with reward."
"Lin Wei, you should give it a try. You're a newbie, I'll help you kill the sea creatures." Seeing that Lin Wei's expression hadn't changed, Kaiya assumed he was still terrified by what had happened earlier and said kindly.
"Okay, I'll give it a try. Thank you, teacher," Lin Wei said with a smile, his eyes filled with determination.
Soon, Lin Wei successfully injected a water element factor into the thin thread and slowly lowered it. He moved very carefully, his eyes fixed on the thread.
[Basic Induction Technique: Level 1 (5/500)]
Lin Wei thought to himself, "So it's already been recorded in Deep Blue Dimension?"
He found that learning new skills or combat techniques was now much easier for him. A look of surprise appeared on his face.
"Well done, you succeeded on the first try?" Kaiya was somewhat surprised, his eyebrows slightly raised, his eyes revealing astonishment.
For a newcomer, succeeding on the first try on a bumpy sea is no easy feat. Lin Wei's expression was calm, as if he had seen many storms before.
"Just lucky." Lin Wei smiled, a slight upturn at the corners of his mouth revealing a humble smile.
The thin line extended downwards for nearly ten meters, but apart from the tactile sensation of the water, no other signals were transmitted. Lin Wei frowned slightly, his eyes filled with doubt.
